SFP (Small Form-factor Pluggable) module connector with various data speed rates is a major optical transceiver used for data communication. First introduced in early 2000, SFP connectors were designed to replace the previous gigabit interface converter (GBIC) in fiber optic and Ethernet high-speed networking systems. Based on IEEE 802.3 and SFF-8472 protocol specifications, SFP module connectors can handle up to 4.25Gb/s with greater port density than GBIC, earning them the nickname "mini GBIC."
To meet the demand for faster transmission speeds, SFP+ (or SFP10) was introduced in 2006 as an extension of SFP. Based on IEEE802.3ae, SFF-8431, and SFF-8432 protocol specifications, SFP+ supports data rates up to 10Gb/s and is compatible with Fibre Channel, 10GbE, SONET, OTN, and other communication standards. While similar in size to SFP, the primary difference is transmission speed. Both SFP and SFP+ are available in copper and optical variants.
